Study of plate bounderies
This is my portion of the world and as you can see there are many different plate boundaries. Each boundary exhibits a different type of movement.
Three plates in this area are the Pacific Plate, the North American Plate, and The Juan De Fuca Plate. Most of the plates in this area are cut in half.
Juan De Fuca Plate
The Juan De Fuca Plate is one of the world smallest plates and is sub ducting under the North American Plate. It is moving east-northeast at 4 cm (~1.6 inches) per year. As it moves it builds up tension and when the tension releases it could cause a major Earthquake. I think in a few centuries the tension will get too great and it will cause a huge Earthquake.
North American Plate
this Currently the North American plate is moving to the west-southwest at about 2.3 cm (~1 inch) per year. This movement is caused by seafloor spreading at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. In many many years this movement could cause new land forms to form in places in the world.
Pacific Plate
Currently the Pacific Plate is moving northwest at about 7 cm/year. The plate is moving toward the North American Plate and could collide with in years to come. The San Andreas Fault is a well known location in America and is known for many earthquakes. These earthquakes are caused by the Pacific Plate rubbing against the North American Plate. Both of these plates move in the same direction but the pacific plate moves faster causing the earthquakes.
